This is my sis, Dot.

She is just a tot.

Do not bop me, Dot.

Do not sit in my spot.

Do not hog it, Dot.

Dot! That is my hot dog.
Do not rob me.

Stop it, Dot!

Get the mop.

Oh no! It is up top.

Good job, Dot.

I mop!

OK, Dot.
You mop a lot.

  • Practice the CVC, short o pattern by creating a word ladder. Use a dry erase marker to write the following words in order by erasing the changing letter: top ➜ hop ➜ hot ➜ rot
  • Review high-frequency words from the story. Students can practice reading words with a partner, as a class, and individually.
  • As children read, check comprehension: What does Zog look like? Why does Zog say that Dot is “just a tot”? What are some things that Dot does? Does Zog like what Dot does? Is your family similar to or different from Zog’s family? How?
  • Have students review the story and highlight words with the CVC short o pattern. They can practice by reading words aloud.
