A boy had a pet fly named Fly Guy. Fly Guy could say the boy’s name—Buzz!

“I have a special treat for you today, Fly Guy,” Buzz said. “We’re going to follow this trash all the way to the landfill.”

Fly Guy loved trash!

The garbage truck came!

Trucks pick up trash from homes, schools, and the places people work. These trucks haul trash to the landfill. That is a big area where most of our garbage goes.

Some trucks can haul 20,000 pounds of trash!

Workers drive the trucks and take away the trash. They are sanitation workers.

The workers have a dangerous job. They must . . .

  • lift heavy bins,
  • work with harmful trash, like broken glass,
  • and ride standing outside the truck!

The workers are careful. They wear gloves and boots to keep their hands and feet safe.

A fly can smell garbage from almost 5 miles away!

Most of the trash goes to a landfill. Landfills start as a hole in the ground. The hole is lined with plastic. Then the trash goes on top.

As the trash rots, it gives off gases. It makes a stinky gas that smells like rotten eggs.

What happens when trash is not taken care of in the right way?
It can end up in lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Poor fish!

To help keep trash where it belongs, never litter. Throw it in a bin.

Some trash can even be recycled, or turned into something new. Put paper, plastic, and glass in a recycling bin.

Buzz and Fly Guy pledged to do their part to make our planet a cleaner place.

They could not wait until their next field trip!
