Suggested Reading Focus

Phonics and comprehension (20 minutes)

  • Review short vowel sounds. Isolate and practice each one, and discuss the mouth shape when making each short vowel sound.
  • Practice short vowel patterns by sorting words. On a dry- erase easel, create five columns, one for each vowel. Say the following words aloud and tell students to listen for the short vowel sound in each word: can, bed, sit, top, hug. Once students have identified the vowel sound, practice spelling words as a class as you write it in the proper column.
  • Review high-frequency words from the story. Students can practice reading words with a partner, as a class, or individually.
  • As children read, check comprehension: Where is Ted at the beginning of the story? Where is he trying to go? How does he try to get on the bed? Why does he have to run? How does the dog help? How does he feel at the end of the story?
  • Have students review the story and highlight words with a CVC short vowel pattern. They can practice by reading words aloud.
