• Take a close look at the photo. What about the inside of the rock reminds you of Cookie Monster? Help children see that we get information from pictures as well as text.
• Let children know that labels point to parts of the picture and tell us more about it. Have children find the labels and follow the arrows with their fingers. Read the labels together.

• Gauge the readability of this text for your class. Students can whisper read, or you can invite individual students to read.
• Point out the pronunciation key for the word agate (A-guht). Sometimes words don’t sound the way they are spelled, and authors want to show us how to say the word.
• Have a discussion with children about what they learned about the agate rocks from both the picture and the words in the article.
